What is the Mindset of a Small Business Owner?

mindset_new

Business is a business whether it is online or offline or whether you own a large or small business, problems occasionally arise. You might also fail to reach your goals once in a while and both of these are instances where a solution driven mind set works so very well.

Some of you may know it better as “no excuses” but I see no reason to be harsh about it here. You’ll need to think in a way that solves your problems so you can meet your goals if you want to be successful in business. Excuses are unproductive and avoiding the problem isn’t going to work for you either. The whole point of a solution driven mind set is to overcome your problems so you can make money and make your business sustainable and live your own life.

To demonstrate look below at the mind-set diagram

This mind-set can be summed up as follows:

I call it above and below the line.

Above the line you are the captain of your ship and stir it the way you want and use your oar

If you have problems find a way to fix or mitigate it. You take ownership of the situation

If you see a problem coming, find a way to avert it. You are accountable for whatever is coming. You attract things whether you want it or not. That is the law of attraction in action.

If you fail to accomplish something, figure out why so you don’t fail again. This is called response –able is the ability to respond to whatever comes your way.

Or below the line well that is when you make your bed and lie in it.-

If a problem comes your way,  you blame the government,  the customer, the staff member whoever is in your path but you. The finger points toward someone else.

If a problem comes your way you find excuses and reasons why it did not happen the way you planned it.  There is always an excuse for not doing something the weather was bad, my staff did not come back on time etc…. the list is endless

It is all well and good but how do you solve problems? You’ll need to know about how things work to run a business. Each industry has its own way of doing things, it is like anything else.

Be decisive and act. If you don’t do something with it, knowing the solution does you no good. I’m not talking about panic, which is an exceptional way to insure what you, fear most comes to pass. I mean acting on your solution and putting it into effect. Come up with an effective action plan to solve the problem and then use it. I mean go above the line and take ownership, accountability and be response-able.

Last but not least remember that problems don’t get solved by being below the line and doing the following:

Ignoring them: Problems don’t exist only in your mind. They can hurt you even if you don’t want to know they are present that is called denial,

Giving up and making excuses: If you can’t solve a problem at first, don’t give up. Excuses aren’t helpful, as no volume of them has ever made a problem go away.

Allowing a problem or failure to overcome you: Failures and problems happen. It’s a fact of life and not a reflection on you. When they get tough, take a bit of time to make yourself feel better, take some deep breath, go for a walk do whatever you need to do to change your state. Come back refreshed and then analyze your performance and try again. Take a different approach reframe the experience. What did you learn from your failure. Remember the more you fail the better equipped you are to other problems, be a victor not a victim.

Not preventing them: It’s a blessing when you can see a problem coming, although I know it causes a lot of people heartburn when they do. Act to insure it never comes to pass if you see a potential trouble on the horizon. An ounce of prevention can be worth a pound of cure. It’ll take less time, money and effort to solve problems or avert them before they become big problems.

Panic: It’s worth mentioning this one a second time. I’ve actually seen many small business owners do this and bring their own worst fears to life in a frenzy of so-called ‘preventative action’. To panic is not the equivalent of taking something seriously. Panic is a good way to waste a lot of time, energy and money. So suppress panic when things look tough and just cut straight to the ‘take it seriously’ part. Take ownership

I never did anything worth doing entirely by accident…. Almost none of my inventions were derived in that manner. They were achieved by having trained myself to be analytical and to endure and tolerate hard work.

Thomas Edison

I highly encourage those of you intending to start your own business to develop a solution driven mind-set. When you solve your problems and overcome your failures which this type of mind-set can do, the path to wealth in business can best be reached.
